Jackie Swaisland: What can we do now? Private Sponsorship of Afghan Refugees.

Jackie Swaisland practices immigration and  refugee law at Landings LLP. She is an award-winning lawyer, author, and educator. She is a graduate of Harvard Law School and a former adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. Jacqueline’s practice encompasses all areas of Canadian immigration and refugee law. She also acts for both individuals and organizations in cases involving the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. She is an experienced litigator, having regularly appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board and all levels of court, including multiple times before the Supreme Court of Canada.

In 2015 Jackie founded the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program. The RSSP national pro-bon support program that trains lawyers to provide assistance to refugees who are privately sponsored. She will speaks to  how this program can assist in helping move people out of Afghanistan.

 

Nilofar Ahmadi & Djawid Taheri: Effective advocacy for Afghan refugee claimants at the Refugee Protection Division (RPD).

Nilofar is an active lawyer in the Afghan community. She is Toronto-based, and a co-founded partner at NK lawyers. Her practice is focused on client advocacy before the IRB as well as the Federal Court. She has handled many refugee files since commencing practice.

Djawid is the founder of Taheri Law Firm, the first Afghan-Canadian law firm in Canada. He allocates much of his time toward Afghan-related bro bono services, including the Afghan-Canadian Bar association and the Afghan Association of Ontario.
