Erik Ramakrishnan

Me. Erik Ramakrishnan, c.j.c. (Ontario), c.j.é. (Vermont)

Following a brief career in education, I turned my focus to the law, graduating summa cum laude from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2010. I spent the next 12 years practicing in California—primarily in municipal law—before setting my sights on international practice. In 2020, I earned my Certificate of Qualification from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, laying the groundwork for my eventual Ontario licensure. A 2022 move to Vermont brought me to the Burlington City Attorney’s Office. My time there was highlighted by a major victory in Morin v. City of Burlington (2026 VT 17), where I successfully defended a city charter provision aimed at empowering New Americans to participate in local democracy. When the Canadian government recognized my citizenship in 2026 via Bill C-3, I relocated to Montréal to pursue a long-held interest in refugee law. I dedicated my initial months to mastering the fundamentals of the field, gaining invaluable hands-on experience through volunteer work with a local nonprofit. As of October 7, 2026, I am proud to be sworn into the Barreau du Québec as a Canadian and foreign legal advisor. Using my Ontario and Vermont licenses, this distinct permit enables me to practice federal law in Québec, with a core focus on humanitarian immigration law.
