EL-ASMAR LEGAL

Jouman El-Asmar is the founder and principal attorney at EL-ASMAR LEGAL, boutique law firm specializing in Canadian Immigration and Refugee Law and a member in good standing of both the Barreau du Québec and the Law Society of Alberta. Over the course of her career, Jouman has appeared numerous times before the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Federal Court of Canada, consistently delivering favorable results for her clients. Her deep knowledge of the law, combined with her strong advocacy skills, has earned her a track record of success in even the most complex cases. A graduate of McGill University with a degree in Psychology and International Development Studies, Jouman went on to earn her law degree from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) in 2010, where she was recognized with three awards for her academic excellence. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Law (LLM) in Constitutional Law at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. Her background in psychology informs her trauma-informed approach to legal practice, ensuring that clients not only receive expert legal representation but also feel safe, heard, and supported throughout the legal process. Jouman has been an active member of the CMLA since law school, and she co-founded the Alberta chapter in 2020. She has also served on the national executive board of the Canadian Association for Refugee Lawyers (CARL) from 2021 to 2024, and on the Board of Directors for the ‘Association Québécoise des Avocats et Avocates en droit de l’Immigration’ (AQAADI) from 2019 to 2021. Jouman is also a member of Lawyers without Borders, and the ‘Association des Juristes d’Expression Française de l’Alberta (AJEFA). A longtime advocate of social justice and migrant rights, Jouman works closely with members of marginalized communities and racialized minorities. Since 2022, she has been co-chairing the Family Separation Working Group of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers, a litigation and advocacy group challenging unacceptable processing delays for reuniting minor children with their refugee parents. In December 2023, Jouman joined the ‘International Center of Justice for Palestinians – ICJP Canada' as a staff member. ICJP is an independent organization of lawyers, academics and politicians who work to promote and protect the rights of Palestinians globally. In addition, she is currently working with the Legal Center for Palestine on litigations involving Canadian family members of the victims of the genocide in Gaza.
